For better or worse, Apple has dispensed with this. There are several classes across Engineering - but particularly CS and CpE - that require 圆4 compatibility. The new effect is that the M1 cannot run highly specialized software with reasonable efficiency. The must emulate / translate instructions into ARM, and peripherals do not always work. They cannot use accelerated 圆4 virtualization. New Macs use M1 ARM processors - they cannot dual boot (x86) Windows. Old Macs were 圆4 (Intel/AMD) chipsets - so they could dual boot windows, and they can use accelerated virtualization for other OSes in VMWare, VirtualBox or Parallels. Both of these points are largely misleading. There are a lot of posts flying around about the M1 Mac, and a lot of people saying "it's great for CS" or "it's standard in the industry".
